Noise Cancellation

Shopping for noise-cancelling earbuds? You'll often see two acronyms plastered on the boxes: ANC and ENC. While they sound identical, they serve completely different purposes. Understanding the difference will save you money and ensure you buy the right product.

ANC (Active Noise Cancellation)

ANC is designed for you, the listener. It blocks external ambient noise so you can enjoy your music or focus in silence.

  • Cancels low-frequency drones (airplane engines, AC units)
  • Active during music playback or silence
  • Consumes more battery life

ENC (Environmental Noise Cancellation)

ENC is designed for the person calling you. It removes background noise from your microphone so your voice is crystal clear.

  • Removes wind, traffic, and background chatter
  • Only active during phone calls/recording
  • Minimal impact on battery life

Do You Need Both?

Ideally, yes. High-end earbuds combine both technologies. ANC gives you peace and quiet, while ENC ensures your boss can hear you during a windy commute. However, if you rarely make phone calls and just want to block out gym noise, you only need to pay for ANC.
